Cherwyn Ambuter


Cherwyn holds a B.A. in Music from Tufts University, and a M.M. in Piano Performance with a minor in Choral Conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). She studied voice with a Conservatory professor of voice and directed the adult choir at Grace Evangelical Free Church of Greenhills, OH while working on her M.M. At Tufts she was awarded first place (a scholarship award) in the Elizabeth Verveer Tischler Piano Competition, and also first place in the Tufts Concerto Competition, which gave her the honor of performing the Schumann Piano Concerto with the Tufts Symphony Orchestra. Her teachers have included Gail Niwa, a former student of Adele Marcus, and Elizabeth and Eugene Pridonoff, who studied with Rudolf Serkin. Chamber music coaches have included the Tokyo String Quartet, the Raphael Trio, Yehuda Hanani, and Jack Kirstein. During high school, Cherwyn sang in the Vermont All-State Chorus and played oboe in the VT All-State Band and the All-New England Orchestra, as well as in VT Youth Orchestra and sang and played oboe and piano throughout high school in Vermont, and in college, including singing and playing the shawm in the Tufts Early Music Ensemble.

Cherwyn currently serves as Music Director of the Jefferson Township Community Chorus in Jefferson Twp., NJ, and directs the senior choir at Calvary Baptist Church in Warwick, NY. Cherwyn serves as the church's organist, as well. She also earned her teaching license at Tufts and has taught choral/general music in the West Milford public schools.

She served as piano and harpsichord accompanist for the NJ Conservatory's 86-member Symphonic Chorus and the smaller, auditioned Chamber Choir, with whom she also sang in their a cappella works. She has collaborated in chamber and solo recital with members of the Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Opera and other music professionals; has served as accompanist with several choral societies; university and high school choirs, and the Cleveland Contemporary Youth Orchestra; and musical theater. Cherwyn traveled with high school choirs in Greater Cleveland to Chicago, where she collaborated with them at the piano to win first place prizes in a competition. Currently she is staff choral accompanist at Vernon Township High School. Cherwyn does occasional work with the New Jersey State Opera and has served as staff accompanist for university vocal programs and opera workshops. She recently joined Manhattan Concert Productions as adjunct pianist for its Octavo series in New York and served as guest pianist for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Cadet Glee Club. She has also been honored to be asked to accompany events of the NJ chapter of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). Cherwyn is a member of Chorus America, the ACDA, and an active member of ChoralNet.

Cherwyn has appeared in recital in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Akron, Boston, New Jersey, Vermont, Warwick, NY and played in a wedding at the Paris, France home of famed organ composer Marcel Dupré on a piano gifted to Dupré by the piano virtuoso Paderewski. She presented the world premiere performance of chamber and solo music of Alfred Morena, Sr., an Italian composer, in an hour-long recital for the Center for Italian and Italian-American Culture in Bloomfield, NJ in 2007.

Cherwyn lives in Vernon, NJ with husband, Hal, and their three children, one of whom earned a diploma at the Juilliard Pre-College Division and now studies Harp Performance and Creative Writing at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

In addition to serving as Artistic Director and Founder, Cherwyn also sings Soprano 2 with the group.
