About Zephyr

Zephyr Vocal Ensemble had its inception as a visionary dream in the  mind of Founder/Artistic Director Cherwyn Ambuter at the end of the year 2009. A love of a cappella vocal/choral music, combined with the lack of a cappella ensemble singing a wide variety of musical genres in the Tri-State region, seemed to lead the way into a decision to establish such a group.

Singer recruitment notices were distributed widely in early 2010, and singer auditions were held in February and March, with Cherwyn, Lucas Rau, and Prof. Stanley Curtis serving as adjudicators. Auditions were competitive, with as many as nineteen singers seeking a spot in one voice part (Soprano 2).

Our first gathering was a dinner and rehearsal on June 17th, 2010, which we regard as Zephyr's "birthday." A wonderful time was had by all getting to know each other as we sat in quartets at four tables, and shared good food and then later, read through some of our music together.

Zephyr débuted on April 2nd, 2011 at St. Francis de Sales R.C. Church in Vernon, NJ, with a concert featuring the music of Irish composer Michael McGlynn and jazz composer Darmon Meader, with guest artists the Mitch Schechter String Jazz Trio. Over 250 delighted audience members helped to make the concert a success. Our first-ever fundraiser Dessert Cabaret, featuring opera, musical theatre, lieder, and other genres, was attended by 176. 210 people enjoyed our first-ever Christmas/Chanukah concert, also in St. Francis de Sales church. We have been invited as special guests to perform on programs by the Ridge Light Opera Co., and Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus in Ridgewood. Zephyr has sung also in Middletown, NY and in Sparta, Stanhope, and Lafayette, NJ.

We look forward to many happy times singing together and sharing the beauty and fun of a cappella music with the public. We currently have openings in the Tenor 1 & 2 and Baritone positions, and wish to develop a list of "alternates" in all voice parts who could join us permanently when a singer departs. If interested to audition, please contact Cherwyn Ambuter (contact info at www.zephyrve.org) and we'll make arrangements! We rehearse in Vernon on Thursdays from 7:00-9:45 p.m.
